How much is this custom tomahawk worth?
I am making a tomahawk for camping trips. It's made from a piece of 1/4" roll forged ballistic armor for a hummer. It's been laser cut to a plains Indian Style Blade with a 16" handle. Its constructed like a full tang knife with two oak round slabs an the sides held by 10 brass rivets. It is almost finished and only needs heat treated and powder-coated mate black. I have gotten a few people that seen it and want one but I have no idea what something like this is worth. It's high-tech and custom in every way, all the way down to the material used. I've seen some tomahawks on eBay going for $250 and they were made from a hammer. So mine has got to be better than that. (Bladesmith's comment much welcome.)
It might be a great piece of work, but I don't really think that it would go for much more of the other tomahawks. usually high quality blades are expensive for two reasons:
1: They are high quality
2: They are made by a renowned blade smith and everyone knows that his work is high quality.
If you start making these regularly and build a following for yourself you should be able to charge much more down the road, but for now I don't think you will be able to get much more that the current market price of $250.
Why not make all swords full-tang?
I am new to collecting swords and such, And I am just wondering why the companies build those really cheap ones where the width of the blade does not go through the handle. (I was goofing around and broke the handle off one)
But it seems like it would be just as easy to build them full tang, then they would bring a higher price. So why not?
These companies are using the least amount of material possible to make a product that looks "real". If you multiply the metal saved per sword by the total amount of swords produced, the money saved goes to profit. Cutting cost to make a product makes financial sense and more so when you consider a product like a sword, where most people will never really by more than one or two. So they don't really have to worry about repeat business. Find a reputable dealer that stocks what you like and happy collecting!
